Long Beach, CA – A five-year drought. And then the skies opened up. In Long Beach, a city of 462,000 just south of Los Angeles, the rivers rose on Friday, February 17, 2017. Nearly 2.5 inches of rain fell in one day. Three dozen trees were uprooted, reports the Long Beach Press Telegram. Streets were blocked with flood water and mud, homes were damaged and vehicles were crushed.

And more rain is expected. That means more flooding, more damaged cars and homes, more damaged roadways, more uprooted trees, reports the Long Beach Gazette.

So what can you do to get ready to file a homeowner’s insurance claim?

1. Notify your insurer to start the claims process
2. Document the damage
3. Complete a proof of loss form to support your claim

STEP ONE: Contact your insurance agent. The agent can tell you whether flood damage is covered. Damage caused by a falling tree, or to electrical wiring, might be covered. It all depends on your homeowner’s policy.

Your agent will tell you to take reasonable steps to protect your property from further damage. This may involve making emergency repairs. Beware of contractor scams, but your first priority must be the safety of your family and property. Take care of it.

STEP TWO: Document, document, document. Take pictures. Lots of pictures. Keep all receipts. That includes emergency lodging, if necessary.

STEP THREE: Complete your insurance carrier’s forms, and prepare for your adjuster to visit. Many carriers nowadays have mobile vans, complete with Internet links and a check-writing facility. You might be able to settle your claim with just one visit.
