Evanston, IL – A Mazda luxury car dealership in Evanston, Illinois, is the latest target of car thieves. Various local news sources in the Chicago area are reporting overnight surveillance video from the dealership shows a group of people breaking display glass at Autobarn Mazda of Evanston, and making off with five cars. The stolen vehicles included four BMWs and a rare Porsche 911 Turbo.
An inside job, or at least insider knowledge, is suspected. The perpetrators seemed to know where to find the car keys, within the dealership’s sales office, reports WGN-TV.
Police have observed a pattern of luxury car thefts in the Chicago suburbs, over the past few weeks. This is at least the third such incident, involving 15 total stolen vehicles, reported by police in recent weeks. The dealerships targeted are located in Evanston and Naperville, Illinois.

When officers responded to the scene, after a 12:16 a.m. report of a disturbance in an alley behind the dealership, they found an overhead garage door forced open, and one unoccupied vehicle still running. Police said the office where car keys were kept had also been forced open.
Two of the BMWs were later recovered near Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. The rare 911 Porsche was found abandoned in downtown Chicago. Autobarn workers interviewed after the incident say the cars were located through GPS tracking.
Police could identify no suspects at this early stage of the ongoing investigation of this series of luxury auto thefts.
